After over a year without a motorcycle I was itching to get back on two wheels. I have never had a dual sport and always wanted to try one. After looking for DRs and KLRs I found a 93 Yamaha XT600 for a decent price. After 11 hours on the road it was home.
Plans are to put some hard panniers on it and maybe paint.
I have some more street friendly tires ready to go on once I find my other tire iron.

Cool. I've been shopping for something similar lately.
That's a lot of bike. I didn't even know that existed as a dual sport option.
Eleven hours?
Not much in your area or was it a really good deal?

Huh, there's one I've never heard of. Very KLR-ish.

It was a good enough deal to make the cost of the drive worth it.
The funny thing is the day after I got back I found a 91 xt600 in my area for only $400 more.

In reply to ddavidv:
It is very similar to the KLR but a bit more powerful (45hp/37tq vs 42hp/34tq) and a dry weight of 344 lbs vs the KLR at 370.
Unfortunately it has no aftermarket support. I plan on getting a pannier rack for a dr650 or klr and modifying it for this. They were produced until 2003 in the rest of the world but only till 95 here. They were also the base for the first Tenere.
Been looking for a KLR or XL, but that is nice find! Congrats
Nice. Keep the paint scheme even if you actually hafta redo it, it's classic.

I rode an '86 XT600 my senior year of college- kick start only. On road, off road, that thing was utterly unkillable. Never stranded me, and even came out of a couple crashes better than I did. Beware, it will wheelie right off idle if the weird dual carb setup is tuned right.
I loved mine, enjoy it.

I need to rethink how I mount tires. so far I have put holes in two tubes while installing the front tire.

There's some great videos on YouTube on how to do it.

That does look handy.
I have mounted tubeless tires before but this time I managed to pinch the tube while getting the last section of bead on. I'll have to get a new tube today and use lots of baby powder/lube and be careful to keep the spoons away from the tube.

Bought a new tube today after work and took care in mounting the tire. No casualties this time.
The new sprockets and chain should arrive on Monday so I will wait to mount the rear tire then. Saturday is supposed to be 40 degrees so hopefully I will get to ride it a bit then.

Got a nice ride in today. Now it is back in the basement before the snow comes.

It just slides in and has one bolt to secure it, I just took it off for this ride since I didn't need it.
I'm probably stating the obvious, but you never know... Put a LITTLE air in the tube. enough that it holds its shape, but not so much that it can't be compressed with a hand. Works for me(mostly).

That's fairly brilliant, right there..
And fairly awesome, too.
I had a rear flat on the MX bike last season. From the time I put the bike on the stand to pull the wheel, til I set it back down with the wheel reinstalled, 15 minutes, and I was taking my time. It doesn't take the tire off, but it puts it back on in seconds. He does it slowly in the vid so you can see what's happening.
Now for sale, and cheaper, in the US
