I took the ATV (Polaris Scrambler 400) out for a little fun in the woods at a local rally. Really nice 12-mile loop through the woods. Or so I thought.

On the first loop, the luggage rack worked itself loose and started to flop around. OK, it was a stupid design, I will weld something up later to fix it. Tie it down, limp to the parking lot and remove it.

On the second loop, the rear drive chain breaks, and is lost in a mud pit. Front wheel drive gets me down the trail a little bit, but I eventually need a tow. I walk 2 miles out and loose two hours getting that resolved. K3 Offroad was there and had a chain for me, so that was great.

On the third loop, I was clipping along a a nice rate of speed through the trees and suddenly the quad went left as if someone had switched the tracks on a railroad. I went straight into a tree at, I don't know, 35 mph? Caved the front of the quad in, destroyed the radiator, and busted up my knees. The good news is that when I flew off, I went to the left of the tree and avoided a trip to the hospital or morgue. I did however complete a full flip in the layout position as I went 20 yards into the woods. No one filming, damn!

So I have some repairs to do and will keep the speed down through the trees from now on. Especially the ones that jump out in front of you!

I had a quad do that to me some years ago. And being a MTB rider in a previous life, I tried to MTB it by planting a foot and kicking it back right. Took over a year for my knee to heal correctly.

I'll add these useless but personal comments. All the Polaris's (Polarii?) I've ridden handle funny, and I'd never even attempt 35mph on them...

I ride with guys with a variety of machinery. Invariably, honestly, if a machine needs to get towed out or limped back to camp, or has a random part fall off, it's a Polaris...

Sorry about your run in with the tree, very glad you weren't more seriously hurt.

You are wrong. Trees are good, it is quads that suck.

Whenever I crashed my dirt bikes, they landed away from me. Whenever I crashed my quad, it tried to kill me by dragging me, landing on me or running me over.

Any crash you walk away from is a pretty good crash. Glad you're alright.

Ouch.

The problem with quads are the two superfluous wheels they come with.

That's why the front ones should rarely touch the ground!!
