OK, it's apparent that the Nighthawk isn't going to sell. Ever. So fine.... I'll make it better. A little more power, upgrade the suspension and brakes, add a small screen etc.

So... since the NH forums are pretty much dead, and y'all seem to know EVERYTHING....

Planning on progressive springs and fork seals and fluid, rear progressive shocks/springs. Vance & Hines pipe, jet kit, and a complete carb rebuild. While I'm at it change the clutch. So I got the suspension figured out, an extra 10hp or so with the carbs/pipe (putting me at ~85hp, 50tq). The bigger problem is brakes. Rear drum. Single front disc.

Ideas? Thoughts? resources?

Convert it to use forks from something else w/ dual disks, maybe USD forks as well? I'm sure someone's done it, at best you just need the right steering head bearings, and at worst you'd need custom triples.

For the rear, a rear wheel from something else, a bit of welding on the swingarm, and some spacers?

I'm trying to keep this as unobtrusive to the original bike as possible. Plus.... you don't want to see me welding something.

I'd MUCH rather it sold and I moved on to something modern. But I'm seeing the prices on these as they are not what the used to be.

Well then for berkeley's sake don't do a bunch of work on it, then you'll just feel you need EVEN MORE above market value

The only easy way to improve those brakes at all is probably going to be to make sure they're in tip top shape and use the best pads available- I can't find anything in my googlings which would lead me to believe there are easy brake swaps for the Nighthawk.

Do these not share much with the NT650? Or do we just not know because there's not many people modding them?

I'd take a look on the NT650 forums and see what they're doing and maybe do some eyeballing and such to see if any of it is useful for you. Those guys are doing some awesome E36 M3 to their bikes.

I'm going with ¯_(ツ)_/¯, use upside down forks from a GSX-R. Find it at a wreckers. Squids have been smashing them for years... Take everything from the master cylinder to the wheel. This will help considerably in making them fit: http://cognitomoto.com/products/gsx-r-fork-on-honda-cb750-frame-conversion-stem

Here is someone doing similar... http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=63784.0 Under $500 too.

Or... lower your price and take what you can get... then buy a modern motorcycle fer fecks sake.

Use that website with caution, E36 M3 adds up in a hurry

For front brakes, if you still have the OEM rubber line, change it to a braided stainless line, and get the most aggressive pads you can find. Back in the day I really liked Galfer, IDK if they are still around.

Adding a few teeth on the rear sprocket will give a quick seat of the pants power increase. Going down 1 tooth on the front sprocket has the same effect.

If I was going anywhere with the sprockets it would be the opposite way. Hell, at 60mph it's turning 4400rpms as it is. I don't need MORE rpms to run in traffic!

It's an inline 4 banger Honda. You are just above lugging it at 4.4k... spin that berkeleyer!

I wouldn't get hung up on having USD forks or not. More modern conventionals can work quite well. A swap that's been done with less custom parts and is well documented would be more important to me. Dual disks would take away the need for a really agressive front pad. I like the idea of a braided brake line setup. You could use this as a time to change bars as well if you wanted; may have to with a front end swap.

I also wouldn't bother with the hassle & cost of a rear disk swap. It isn't like you're on the rear brake much. Finally, get the right springs for your weight and not progressives if you have the option.

I was suggesting the GSXR USD forks as an easy way to get good front brakes and a nice suspension upgrade in the same trip to the junkyard. It's probably easier than a wheel swap - having to fab up the other caliper bracket and because it probably also needs a larger vol master cyl anyway.

This route makes the most sense to me, but Bob just has to be difficult

This one redlines at 8500. It's happiest in the 2500-4500 range.

Yeah, and I'm suggesting that gixxer USD's are great, but I'd find the easiest path to forks from the last 15 years with dual disks over working harder for USD's. Which ever path requires the last amount of custom work is my suggestion. We're both suggesting a wholesale front suspension swap anyway so maybe we can consider this hair split.

There is many way to upgrade the chassis, i eouls start eith a complete front end from a cbr or vfr non usd to save cost and respring it. Most honda bike up to about 2000 should have the same neck bearing and the stem length dont vary that much on them. Get good rear shocks and be done with it or go full berkeley and seap the swingarm and wheel from a 600cbr with a 160 tire on it.

For example a 72cb750 share the rear axle size and the neck bearing with a cbr600f3... a lot can be found on customfighter.com its like the grassrootmotorspprt forum of the streetfighter. i think i saw a bike like you being built few years ago
