Stopped in at Dick's and looked around there. They have a nice selection of Dimondbacks, and the one that stood out most was a MTB, not sure about the model, but it was $300, reduced from $500, and had everything I was looking for in the first place.

Mountain bikes are great for off roading, but very inefficient on the road. I'd seriously consider at least getting a road or cross tire even if you opt for a suspended mountain bike.

My next commuter bike will consist of the following:

Old solid fork mountain bike (Specialized, Bridgestone etc.) - something that nobody will want to steal.

Convert it to single speed - increases reliability, makes it quieter and gives better exercise since you have to stand up more

Fenders - ugly and functional

rack on the back - again, ugly and functional

homebrew light set up

some Ritchey Tom Slick or similar tires

Fast, ugly, reliable, low maintenance. Perfect.
