Main thing is to keep some oils in it, I suppose. Though I bet it has a coating on it already.
A sun shade would probably be the best option.
I was surprised how quickly my steering wheel abraded and started to lose color and even flake in the areas where I held it. A bit late, but I bought a decent steering wheel cover for it.
How about a nice steering wheel cover and then replace that every few years as needed?
