Is there any way to remove cheap chrome plating from aluminum valve covers? Maybe an acid dip or blasting with Black Beauty? Not sure/don't know.
The plating is flaking off, but the aluminum beneath is nice.

I would not recommend acid. I tried muratic acid on a cheap VW steel bumper years ago and it did nothing to the chrome. I don't actually know why I thought it would in hind sight... I just let it sit longer thinking it might just help make mechanical stripping easier. Eventually I realized there was almost no bumper left, just the chrome shell... Aluminum disappears pretty quick in any strong acid so I would expect your results to be even worse than mine. Can you do something to encourage the flaking but not eat into the aluminum too deep? Salt bath for some corrosion to creep under the chrome?
On this thread, someone mentioned using 'Metal Rescue', and that it removed all the chrome:
