Every new technology has to start somewhere..
Back in the day, my future in-laws traveled frequently BY CAR between Phoenix and York PA. By the time She Who Would Become Mrs shadetree30 came along there were three of them on a board in the back covered by a blanket. And nary a mark on any of them!

You are in a beautiful area!
Uh, you are missing one distinct, unique area- the UP. And the Yuppers are quite a bit different than the Loppers who can't stand the Metros. So area and people are very different.
BTW, it's close enough that going up from Traverse City is worth it- just to cross the bridge. You can rush up there OR drive up to Petosky, and the take the coast road- M119 up. Very, very, very nice drive.
Considering the lenght of the total drive, the excursion up to Macknaw and over the bridge is small compared to the trip back. And realistically, to make up time, the part of I-75 that comes down- outside of holiday times, it's not all that driven (take middle of the week) and one of the more remote freeways sections west of the Mississippi.
Maybe I'm a bridge nerd, but I really love crossing the Mackinaw bridge.
Oh, a quick google- Lake Shore Drive- M119 is also called the tunnel of trees.
Great advice everybody! We had whitefish last night, and tbh it was pretty terrible... maybe we'll try again today.
In other news, I walked down to breakfast to eat with Katie and she was sitting with a new family! She got so tired of us, she found a nice older couple to hang out with. Hopefully she got a donation towards college.
Back in the sixties, the Press On Regardless stage rally used to run an M119 stage in the middle of the night. The road was known to the rally guys as "Nightmare alley"

I wonder if it's the same thing as lutefisk; a North Dakota "delicacy" with Norwegian roots...foisted upon visitors/newcomers with the admonition "ya gotta try this!"
We're loading up the car now—time for Mackinac island!!
We now have bikes and a place to eat lunch. :D
During the week on the island up I saw the UPS guy being driven around on a flatbed and horse with the packages on the back. That was funny.
this thread is absolutely wonderful. my family and I tend to use my 70 duster. there is only three of us. my daughter doesn't complain too much to the back seat but she's 4.

Skip the whitefish, go for the walleye. Or perch.
The 52 mpg was a lie, Tim was being overly optimistic. Realistically, we've been getting somewhere in the low 20s.
Here's something I thought might come in handy before your trip is over. I don't want to jinx you, but . . .
This comes from the DIY thread of Popular Mechanics.
Just in case you don't have a wrench or don't have the right sized wrench.

The most tasteless fish I've ever encountered. I didn't think it was terrible, just...not there.

As a person who went to school in Flint, I don't know WTF you are talking about. If you would lump Flint with "everything else" that makes MI sound pretty bad. Just sayin'!

In reply to Nashco:
There are plenty of burned out crime filled ex industrial towns all over MI, Benton Harbor, Saginaw, rough end of Lansing, Albion(college area excluded), etc. I think JohnRW1621 was more referring to the population density.

Why, are you trading one blue car for two red ones?
In reply to Woody:
Nope, just a Star Lines rooster-tail ferry to Mackinac Island
