So I got a text from a good buddy with this picture saying he bought this thing

https://www.govdeals.com/index.cfm?fa=Main.Item&itemid=59&acctid=8626

He needs a truck for his fledgling business to haul test equipment around.

So this coming Thursday at the crack o' dawn, we're flying down to Atlanta, get a rental car and head a couple hours south to pick it up. The plan is to be back home west of Chicago sometime on Friday.

Don't forget to pick up a project car and trailer while in Atlanta!

Good luck!

Of course, you'll need to do the trip twice: once regular, and once with the lights and siren on. We need comparison times!

I presume Captain Chaos will join you?

Does that seem like a crazy good deal? Also interested in what you find based on the description of "old and worn out."  I assume they mean as an ambulance, but I'm really curious about what you find.

Q: Will it drive several hours to another destimation? (5/24/23 4:28 PM)

A: Maybe, maybe not! I probably wouldn't drive it several hours. (5/24/23 4:40 PM)

Supposedly the person who was answering the questions was also bidding on it.

My buddy called the county on it and got some straight answers on it. Emergency use ambulances for Chicago can only be 8 years old. Non emergency use 10 years. I assume they are more lenient in Ga.

Do these have an hour meter ?

it seems most of the time they are left running with the lights and flashers going ,

80-100k miles but how many hours  idling ?

I applaud your hopes and dreams of making it home without a tow truck.

Very cool.  You might want to check the emergency lighting laws for the states you're traveling through.  Some of them are strict about what color lenses you can have even when they're not on.

Well, not much we can do about that right now. If we get stopped, we get stopped.

We are getting on 75 south now.

The one thing I kept telling myself when driving SanFord home. Every mile traveled the tow bill gets cheaper. cheeky

If a 56 bus can make 1100 miles after sitting for 12 years, you shouldn't have any issues.

Excellent suggestion. What about just duct taping over the lights? Shouldn't take long and shows good intent to observe the laws, and will hopefully be easily removable.

Sitting at Buc-ee's having lunch right now. I've never been to one and don't need to ever again.

Picked it up and the folks were very friendly in showing how things work.

They said it sat for 3 weeks, my buddy jumped in and it started right up. AC blows icy cold. Will have to do some bleaching in the back to clean some up some old fluids.

We are on the north side of Atlanta and stuck in some traffic. It drives better than expected The ride's pretty good though the steering is a little loose after so many miles. It'll definitely need some work when we get home. Best of all we found the cruise control.

I'm surprised they sold it still in full decals.

Tape should do it or, plastidip if you wanted to get fancy.

They removed the local decals and probably didn't care about the rest.  We've had a few strange looks from the authorities but no one willing to stand next to the highway to interrogate us.

Made it to Chattanooga and stopped for the night. Had some fine Cracker Barrel for dinner.

Filled up with fuel and we are thinking about 10 mpg.

Also checked the age of the tires and 18th week of 2023 so good score on those! That matches when they said the last full service was done.
