I'm looking for a newer work van, and this one popped up on marketplace.  It looks pretty good in the pictures and the mileage is low.  It's got this weird shelf in the back and I can't figure out what it used to do.  Does anyone here recognize this?  I know this place has all the answers.  Thanks in advance.

The winch is obviously to pull something in there, and the tie downs at the back are to lock it in place.  Not sure what is that short/shallow, but also that wide.

In reply to Mr_Asa :

It looks like the winch raises and lowers the rear, I think it's hinged at the front.

That was my thought as well, but according to This ad for the same rack, it's just to carry heavy stuff.

Why carry heavy objects 2 feet off the floor, rather than on the floor? Seems like handling would suffer.

I figured this would be the place to ask.  I had originally thought it was for caskets, but wanted confirmation.  Thank you guys.

The ad says it can be tilted by lowering hte back end -- presumably that's how you get the casket out?
