This 03 Dmaxx is my first diesel ever. My owner's manual are my Hayne's. In there it says to check the oil level every 250mi.....really? The last trip I made from Decker Prairie Tx. to BH'am AL (750mi) showed after a week there to check my oil level....I was down 2.5qts. The truck has 198K showing. I've had cylinder head work done......compression is within spec. Am I to be alarmed?......not seeing any blue smoke whatsoever....

That seems a bit high.  I've had two duramaxes (an '02 with an LB7 and an '07 with an LBZ), both had about 150K on them when I sold and neither used anything like that much oil.

How big are the oil spots on the ground when it's parked?

Yes, that's excessive.  It's going somewhere.  I don't know what that has for exhaust after treatment but if it's burning it that much oil isn't good for whatever it has.  If it's leaking you should be able to see it leaving spots on the ground.

That's pretty excessive. I don't know what type of breather system those engines have, but that's a lot of oil for a relatively low mile truck. If it isn't leaking, I'd be suspect of turbo seals more than anything else, especially if it runs well and doesn't do the valve stem seal puff of smoke starting after it's sat for a bit. For the compressor side you can pull a charge pipe ands ee how much oil is in there. I don't have an easy check for the turbine side.

Well , while having this up on the alignment rack I noticed oil at the oil filter/oil cooler. Not excessive, kinda like a drain pan bolt that needs tightening. So after paying for the front end rebuild (more on my shock absorbers thread) , I sauntered on over to TBall diesel that did the top end rehab and spoke to Sean. We had discussed the excessive oil issue over the phone, but when I told him of this scenario the bulb of comprehension (worn out o-rings)came on. Is not dripping enough to spot the pavement, but when under R's......hey where did the oil go? To the shop next week.......pssst the front end work is superb

Dad doesn't check his that frequently, although his have fewer miles (04 with 130k and 08 with a ridiculously-low 45k).  The 04 drinks less than a quart every 5000 miles.
