Tuning and Failure

Rennie Bryant does the driving at Balanced Performance, near Atlanta, Georgia.

We were making only 2 pounds of boost.

Once that our 1963 Corvair’s carburetor was finally “just right,” we went back to the dyno at Balanced Performance for some tuning. We got our air/fuel ratio set and had the car running perfectly. Somehow, though, we were only making 72 horsepower at the wheels. A boost gauge soon told us why: At 5000 rpm, we were making only 2 psi of boost. We obviously had turbo troubles, so we’ll have to tear the car apart again to see why the compressor isn’t making any pressure.
