Restoration Impossible: Installing the Deck Lid and Hood

Here you can see the half moon shaped channels that the hood rides in. At the top rear, you can see the latch mechanism that holds the hood down.

We were finally to the point with our project Lotus Elan where we could install the deck lid and hood. We purposely waited to the very end, as we didn’t need these pieces getting in our way as we worked on and tuned the rest of the car.

The hood on an early Elan has no hinges. It uses a simple light and unique system of attachments with springs that hold the front of the hood into two stainless steel covered half-moon-shaped channels. Two latches hold the rear down.

Moving to the trunk, we had gotten a new seal from RD Enterprises. However, we ended up switching to something we had laying around that was a little softer, as we were having trouble with the trunk lid sitting up above the body with the original seal.
