Electrical issue? First check the connectors and grounds.

The good news is our 60-year-old Corvette soldiered through this horrible weather just fine. The bad news is the left headlight door didn’t want to retract afterward, while the wiper switch became intermittent. As the car was not equipped with intermittent wipers, this was a real problem.

We had let a friend borrow the Corvette for a day on our recent Orange Blossom Tour, and the day just happened to start with torrential rain.

As is usually the case on old cars, the faults turned out to be simple and were caused by bad connections and dirty grounds.

We cleaned and lubricated the terminals with dielectric grease, knocking another problem off our to-do list. That list, fortunately, is getting shorter.

Another great solution (did you see what I did there?) is DeoxIt D5S-6 cleaner.  A can should be included with the sale of any classic car!  Spray it into any connector or switch, operate it a few times, spray again.  It does exactly what the name says.

I also use a piloted spot-weld cutter (looks like a 3/8" hole saw) to clean around ground screw holes.  Run it slowly and rock it a little bit and it will leave bright metal all around. Put a dab of grease on it, a star lock washer between the surface and the lug and it's good to go.
