To prepare for the upcoming Pinehurst Concours d’Elegance, our first order of business was to fix some rust. While this was a relatively rust-free Colorado car, the tin worm had attacked the front of the rocker panels, the trunk floor, the front crossmember that the bumper mounts to, and the left rear quarter panel.
To get to the rust up front we needed to pull the front bumper, front fenders and radiator. We also pulled the grille off the hood, then the hood off the car. This wasn’t necessary to fix these areas, but did make it easier. We decided to paint the whole car, so it had to come off anyway.
At the rear, we emptied the trunk and pulled the gas tank to get access to the rusty trunk floor and rear quarter panel. We also pulled the trunk lid for our forthcoming paint job. Event if we weren’t painting the whole car, we would have pulled the trunk lid, as it severely restricts light and accessibility while working in the trunk.
