Off to Pinehurst

We decided to temporarily skip restoring the rear end, but we picked up a disc-brake rear end from a 1967 250 SL. We were running out of time, and with less than a week before our big debut event, we decided to leave our noisy, worn-out rear end in our old Mercedes. We quickly painted the rear end and the underside of the car Hell Blau (sky blue).

Because of its noisy rear end and our lack of sorting time, we loaded the car on a trailer instead of driving it 400 miles to Pinehurst. We arrived on time with no incidents, got the car unloaded, and put it in line in the Race Class.

This was an inaugural event for Pinehurst, but we were very impressed by the cars, venue and staff; this is one of the nicest concours events we have ever attended. And no, we didn’t learn how to accept that Best of Show trophy gracefully.

I judged the car at Pinehurst. While I loved the car it didn't quite stack up against the "competition" in the Race Car class.
