Work continues in the Schroeder garage.
The bottom end is pretty simple to put together.
We're using Red Line Oil's assembly lube to make the initial start-up pain and wear free.
With the main bearing caps torqued to the spec 46 lb-in, the crank spins smoothly—perfect.
The new Classic Tube lines were augmented by StopFlex braided flexible lines.
We could have taken it further, but there was no real reason to go that far for only tiny incremental gains while removing the ability to rebuild the engine easily in the future.
This past weekend saw us wrapping up the installation of our BMW’s brake lines from Classic Tube and the start of work on our bottom end.
The rules for SCCA’s Street Prepared allow for balancing, factory second-overbores and some other subtle tweaks to the basic engine unit. To that end, we’ve torn our engine down to the nitty gritty and taken it to the machine shop. It was returned with a first overbore and a crank that was turned .010 under. We could have taken it further, but there was no real reason to go that far for only tiny incremental gains while removing the ability to rebuild the engine easily in the future.
