We swapped out the elderly (and heavy ) starter with a more modern version.
Alfa four-cylinders use this special bolt to get the correct starter pinion lash.
After hearing our engine run on what appeared to be three cylinders, we took the cam covers off to verify cam timing.
Our new starter just arrived from International Auto Parts. It was a direct replacement for the heavier and larger unit that had seen better days. We bolted it in last night and actually got the Alfa to fire up. It became clear pretty quickly that the car was not firing on all four cylinders. Unfortunately, cylinder #3 was spitting like there was a bad spark plug or wire. We’ll check that out and get this engine running right over the weekend, we hope.
