Check it out, the engine runs! Since some a/c work is in our future, we left off that belt.
What’s left? Button up the patient after surgery. We still need to reinstall the a/c compressor, adjust the clutch, torque the engine crossbrace, tighten the alternator belt, and take care of a few little things.
The moment we have been waiting for: bringing our rebuilt engine back to life. First, we drained the fuel tank and poured in a few gallons of fresh unleaded. Then we energized the fuel pump to check for leaks.
Then we filled the oil tank with a few quarts. Bumping the starter with the coil disconnected moved some oil to the engine sump so we could add a few more quarts to the tank. Before adding spark to fuel, we cranked the engine to build oil pressure.
Finally, we turned the key—and?—our 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera immediately came to life! No smoke, perfect oil pressure, and that wonderful exhaust note.
