A tap and die set is useful if you need to clean threads or even make new ones, but it can be easier than you realize to make mistakes.

There have been times when I have needed to cut a bolt shorter and didn't have a die available to straighten the cut threads or didn't have one in the right size. In that situation it helped to first run a nut down on the bolt before cutting it, then running the nut back up and off the bolt will help straighten the threads that werre bunged up by the hacksaw.
