Thanks to the oil crises of the 1970s, new rules were introduced for the 1976 running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans—the most significant being that all cars needed to be capable of at least 7 mpg. A side effect of the rulings was that a number of factory teams pulled out.

In response, officials put out invitations to IMSA and NASCAR teams in the hopes that they could fill in the missing ranks. However, only two teams answered the call.
