BMW X6M: Less Utility, More Sport, All M

It’s a paradox wrapped in an enigma: a not-so-practical SUV that can turn some mean lap times thanks to an extra dose of BMW performance technology. Meet the all-new BMW X6 M, a 567-horsepower beast that, as we personally discovered, can devour Texas’s Circuit of The Americas Formula 1 course.

Go: Power comes from a 4.4- liter, 32-valve V8 engine fitted with not one, but two turbochargers. It’s backed by an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. A V8 without any turbochargers would be plenty quick; add the pair, and acceleration is staggering, especially for a 5185-pound vehicle. BMW claims a zero-to-60 time of 4 seconds flat, with top speed electronically limited to 156 mph.

Whoa: BMW upgraded the braking as well, fixing six-piston front calipers. Brakes are nothing without ample footprint, and just the front tires are impressive: 285/35R21 Michelin Pilot Super Sports wrapped around 21x10-inch wheels. The rears are even bigger.

Ho: Wagons ho, right? Well, that’s where things get a little tight. The front two passengers are bathed in comfort, with every conceivable power accessory within reach. If those in the back stand taller than about 5-foot-9, however, their heads will rub on the headliner.

And there’s our rub with the X6 M. Yes, it’s fast and more than track capable. It will likely outrun whatever is parked in your garage.

The fact that all of that performance comes wrapped in a vehicle that sits so tall can be summed up in just one word: style. Real performance junkies will naturally gravitate to those BMW M vehicles sporting a lower center of gravity. For those who enjoy running while wearing boots, well, there’s the X6 M. MSRP starts at $103,050.

I know these are completely useless and silly.

I don't care, i still want one. I can't think of anything better for epic trips around the country as a proud DINK household.

How could this ever be a CMS topic?

I agree, how could this be a topic, The Honda Crosstour, the Acura Version (name?) and coming soon a Mercedes version. This niche market of a niche market is perhaps the worst example of a vehicle design and execution since the Pacer, the Gremlin, and the unforgettable AZTEK!!!!! It just proves again marketing and M-Power can do wonders for a POS.

Stop encouraging these manufacturers from designing and making really good and useful vehicles!!!!!!

I love X6M's. There's a red one near me with the licence plate 'X6M' in bright red. Thank the FSM that the guy bucked the boring black/gray trend and got a color that stands out.

BTW am I the only one who hates these cross posts canoes of articles to the forum? for some reason they really piss me off. I'd be fine with a posting saying 'Hey, we've just driven the new ABC Whizzang mega mobile read about it here' with a link, but this just feels like bot spam.
