Monterey Kickoff Cruise-In: Car Week Officially Begins

Story and Photos by Tom Suddard

Pop Quiz: What has more classic car activities, fans, auctions, shows and races than anywhere else in the world? Monterey Car Week, the week-long celebration of classic cars that’s grown around the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The week starts Tuesday, August 21 with our 2018 Monterey Kickoff Cruise-In at Pacific Grove, California, and continues through the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance the following weekend.

This year our Kickoff party grew even more, taking over almost the entirety of Pacific Grove’s picturesque downtown with amazing cars. Lighthouse Avenue was packed with everything from MGBs to McLarens, with thousands of people joining to see the spectacle.

Though this free event had no formal judging, a few awards were presented.

They included:

• Best British: Presented by Moss Motors
• Best Alfa Romeo: Centerline International
• Mayor’s Choice: Presented by the Mayor of Pacific Grove

We need to thank our partners, too, including Michelin, Hagerty, Hillbank Motor Corporation, Reliable Carriers, Inc., Meguiar’s, Centerline International, Moss Motors, and the Pacific Grove Chamber of Commerce & Tourist Centers.

We’d also like to thank our local friends who helped us host the event. They included:

The California Auto Museum in Sacramento
The SPCA for Monterey County
The Mayor of Pacific Grove, Bill Kampe
The Monterey Fire Department
• Engineering students from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and UC Santa Cruz

We’re again hosting our Monterey Kickoff Cruise-In at Pacific Grove next year, and have already reserved even more space for attendees to show their cars. Whether you’re coming for the day or for the whole Monterey Car Week, we’d love to have you at our 2019 Kickoff Cruise-In at Pacific Grove.
