Before Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM), there was Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft (DRM).
Between the series founding in 1972 and when it folded in 1985, only one BMW managed to secure a championship win: This very Schnitzer BMW E21 Group 5 Turbo.
After securing the 1978 DRM championship win, this BMW would go on to compete for 10 more seasons before retiring in 1988.
The E21 race car is one of only two of its kind built by BMW Motorsport specifically for Group 5, and also has some legendary names tied to its ownership and driver history–Hans-Joachim Stuck, Manfred Winkelhock and Harald Ertl, to name a few.
In the late 1990s, the BMW was acquired by Qvick Motors in Zevekote, Belgium. In their care, the car was “painstakingly restored throughout to extremely high standards,” per the seller.
Find this 1978 Schnitzer BMW E21 1.4-litre Turbocharged Group 5 Turbo for auction from Bonhams | Cars, with an estimated value of $770,000-$980,000.
