A piece of Corvette history: First “Field Test Fleet” 1957 Corvette

This Corvette has a few firsts under its tires.

March 17, 1957, the day a pair of factory-backed Corvettes made Chevy history by finishing first and second at 12 Hours of Sebring in the GT Class.

But what was going on behind the scenes?

While those Corvettes were gearing up for Sebring, Chevy engineering created five more cars that were similarly equipped for continued development.

This 1957 Corvette one of those development cars, the first of the five created for what Chevy called their “Field Test Fleet.” This fleet helped Chevy finalize the RPO 579E competition cars.

This Corvette earned the Top Flight Award in 2019 for being 94% “as manufactured,” and Corvette Magazine even featured it in their December 2021 issue.

This car sports rare, desirable factory options, including Kelsey-Hayes 5.5-inch steel wheels, Rochester fuel injection and 8000 rpm tachometer.

Find this 1957 “Field Test Fleet” Corvette for auction at Hagerty Marketplace with a current bid of $50,000. But act fast, this auction closes September 24.
