Abarth 208 A Spyder: One-Off Example of “Stile Transatlantico”

Photography Courtesy RM Sotheby's

What’s Stile Transatlantico? It was the Italians attempt to create designs that appealed to the flamboyant style in America during the 1950s. This Abarth 208 A Spyder is a one-off example of Stile Transatlantico.

This can be considered a concept car. It was shown at the 1955 Turin Auto Show. While undeniably Italian underneath the skin, it did manage to appeal to two Americans. Two brothers of the Du Pont family who had a piece of the fortune and loved motor racing, had the Abarth imported here.

After passing hands, it was kept in storage for decades. It was rediscovered in 2007 in “exceptionally original condition.” The decision was to get it running, but also preserve it. Since then, the Abarth has gone on display at The Amelia in 2013 and has received a bare-metal repaint in its original colors in Italy.
