Dakar-surviving Range Rover with unique cantilever suspension

The Range Rover is no stranger to off-road competition, and this one, a survivor of the grueling Dakar Rally, is no different.

What makes this Rover more special than most–aside from the 5th-in-class and 38th overall finish in the 1991 Dakar Rally–is what’s underneath: the suspension.

Unlike most Land Rovers, this one features a prototype cantilever suspension system. According to the seller, this setup features “suspension arms whose axes are fixed to the centre of the chassis, all equipped with horizontal coilover shock absorbers.”

As for the rest of the vehicle, the 4.2-liter V8 under the hood has been modified to produce nearly 300 horsepower and the transmission is comprised of a Santana gearbox plus 24-spline, self-locking front and rear axles. Reportedly, this setup allowed the Rover to reach speeds of over 120 mph on unimproved roads.

After Patrick Tambay drove the Range Rover in the 1992 Dakar Rally, it would later participate in the 1993 Tunisia Rally, 1996 Atlas Rally, and the off-road 24 Hours in 1999 and 2000.
