The man behind this unique creation? Nuccio Bertone, the man credited with the rise of the design house of his family’s name. Nuccio had bought a 1936 Fiat 500 A “Topolino” Balestra Corta chassis with his own money and used it as the foundation for this creation. At the time, he had just taken over Bertone from his father and, with two mechanics working outside business hours, developed this one-off race car.
Nuccio started his racing career at age 33 in this very car and went on to compete in the 1947 Mille Miglia. He then sold it the following year. In total, the Fiat competed in the Mille Miglia four times (1947-1950). Its best finish? Second in class in the 1948 edition.
Later on, Nuccio rediscovered the car in 1996, and commissioned at full restoration at Bertone. Unfortunately, he died before seeing its completion, but it’s gone on to make appearances at several concours, including the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. It remained in the Bertone family collection until the current owner acquired it in 2021.
