If you want people to think you're cool, then you need to drive a cool car, right? That’s pretty much the story of this Mercury Woodie.

José María Mendoza Pardo, then governor of the Mexican state Michoacán de Ocampo, wanted to be associated with a high-end lifestyle. So, in 1947, he ordered this very Mercury Series 79M (with government money, no less) directly from Ford and had it shipped to Mexico.

Much later, in 1994 (and long after the governor fled the country in the wake of political unrest in 1949), the car changed hands and subsequently underwent a 13-year-long restoration that retained much of the original wood framing and even saw the use of a number of period parts.
