Why would Soichiro Honda buy a new car, this Lotus Elite, from another company? His son Hirotoshi Honda explained to Classic & Sports Car in an article from 2021.
“The Elite was like an egg—a world first,” he said. “No frame, no separate chassis: it was kind of like a UFO at that time, and my father was always interested in something new.”
Hirotoshi Honda believed that the Lotus Elite inspired the dashboard of one of Honda’s first mass-produced cars, the S600.
Find this 1961 Lotus Elite Series 2 for auction at RM Sotheby’s, with an estimated value of £70,000-£100,000 (approximately $95,000-$135,000 USD).
