It’s a question that gets raised fairly often. Is X car a work of art? Let’s put that to rest now. This Arnolt-MG displayed at the Museum of Modern Art and was sold new to jazz musician Maurice Stein. That says something.
It is believed MoMA displayed this Arnolt-MG as part of its “Ten Automobiles” exhibit in 1953. The museum’s press release said they selected the cars “primarily for their excellence as works of art.” The exhibit also included a 1952 Cunningham C-4, 1953 Studebaker Commander, 1951 Lancia Gran Turismo and 1952 Ford Comète. Other models represented marques such as Aston Martin, Nash-Healey, Porsche, Siata Daina and Simca.
In that same press release, MoMA described the car as the following: “The Mg shown is the 1950 model TD manufactured in England but with coachwork by Carrozeria G. Bertone of Italy. The standard chassis and engine of the MG has here been equipped with Italian coachwork to produce a car which, unlike its famous predecessor, has full weather protection and ample luggage space. Its wire wheels are virtually the only decoration.”
Find this c.1953 MG TD ‘Arnolt’ Coupé for auction at Bonhams, with an estimated value of CHF70,000-CHF90,000 (approximately $85,000-$110,000 USD).
