This Maserati A6GCS was bought with the intent to race it. From 1954 to 1957, it actively competed in events at storied circuits such as Reims, Montlhéry and Goodwood. Its biggest achievement? A class win in the 1955 RAC Tourist Trophy at Silverstone with drivers André Loëns and Jo Bonnier, winner of the 1959 F1 Dutch Grand Prix.
With this much racing, the chassis shows some evidence of repairs, such as straightening of the chassis members as they pass over the rear axle. In 1957, Loëns exchanged the car with Maserati for a newer 200 S. Sadly, Loëns perished in a racing accident in that 200 S soon after while leading at Montlhéry.
It is believed Maserati held onto the A6GCS among several other notable cars to build a heritage collection. In 1998, the Maserati, now a rolling chassis, underwent a restoration. In 2001, it made its public debut at a Maserati concessionaire in Modena. Then it returned to the track in the Shell Historic challenge in the early 2000s. It’s since been entered into the Mille Miglia five times within the past 12 years and has been regularly driven.
