Wrangling the No. 3 Alvis race car around Brookland’s high Byfleet Banking for the final time in the 1924 JCC 200 Miles Race, Frank B. Halford would zip across the finish line in 5th place out of 39 entries.
One of only two purpose-built works race cars built by Alvis to compete in the Brooklands 200 Mile Race and the first of Alvis’ three-car-strong effort to cross the finish line, this car helped cement Alvis as both the first British team and the first team of non-supercharged cars to finish the race. (At the same time, it also bested cars from Bugatti, Aston Martin, Frazer Nash and Riley.)
Based on its extensive history file, following the race at Brooklands, the Alvis would continue to be active under several owners, including a stint as a tire tester for Dunlop.
The Alvis would eventually undergo restoration work in the early 2000s and continue to compete, most notably beating a Type 37 Bugatti at the Prescott Speed Hill-Climb.
Despite its age, the car retains several original components–including the chassis, engine and body that raced at Brooklands–and is eligible for several concours and vintage racing events.
