No, we’re not talking about the 1968 Trans Am race at Sebring. This Camaro, owned by Roger Penske and driven by Mark Donohue, won that. We’re referring to the legendary 12 Hours of Sebring.
The car finished third overall in that event. That’s right, overall. The only cars that beat them that day were a pair of factory-backed Porsche 907 prototypes.
This car is the second of six Sunoco Camaros. The first one is also available at the same auction, which you can find here: [The Camaro Z28 that won Penske’s and Chevrolet’s first Trans-Am win].
This Camaro is dubbed “The Lightweight,” the first Penske Z28 to be acid-dipped. More on that weight in a bit.
The Lightweight won two races in the 1967 Trans Am season, but the success was short-lived as the car was banned late in the year for being underweight. Returning to the grid in 1968, the Lightweight disguised its identity with the grille and taillights from a 1968 Camaro and its roundel numbers were swapped with those of the full-weight '68 Camaro.
Did the Lightweight pass tech? The full-weight car did. Trans Am never weighed the nearly identical-looking Lightweight. (The '67 Camaro did have different vent windows, but no series official seemed to notice.)
The Lightweight Camaro would win the Trans Am race at Sebring, turning lap times 1.5 seconds quicker than the heavier Camaro.
