When Hudson failed to produce a hit after the Hornet, they turned to an Italian coachbuilder to wow the market. This is that attempt, the Hudson Italia, and this particular example is the first one produced.
Carrozzeria Touring of Milan designed the Italia. Hudson built only 25 Italias (21 based off the Hudson Jet, such as this example), plus one prototype, and offered it for $4800. The seller notes that “Hudson is said to have lost money on each one.”
Hudson used this example as its show car. Its next owner then redid the exterior and interior and swapped in a Buick V8 and automatic transmission. Then, in 1980, a new owner bought the car and returned it to factory-correct specs. Now, for the first time in more than 40 years, the car is being offered for sale to the public.
Find this 1954 Hudson Italia by Touring up for auction at RM Sotheby's, with an estimated winning bid of $250,000-$350,000.
