If this doesn’t look like a typical E24 BMW, you’re right. It’s not. It’s a one-off 1982 BMW 635 CSi developed by MGA Developments Ltd. and funded by the British weekly newspaper The Observer.
MGA wanted to showcase its abilities by creating the world’s first fully retractable glass-roofed grand tourer. According to Octane magazine, the project cost £65,000 (approximately $84,000 USD), and that’s not including the car itself. While MGA achieved its quest, the BMW was later converted to a fixed glass configuration in the late 1980s.
Other modifications include bodywork, two-tone gray finish, front and rear spoilers, side skirts and Centra Type 6 alloy wheels. The BMW has been restored and shows less than 20,000 miles.
Find this 1982 BMW 635 CSi “The Observer Coupe” for auction at Broad Arrow Auctions, with an estimated value of €40,000-€50,000 (approximately $43,000-$54,000 USD).
