What makes something the rarest among them all? When it’s a one of one, like this De Tomaso Sport 5000 Spyder.
It’s based on the prototype P70 (which is also currently up for auction) that was developed by Carroll Shelby, Peter Brock, Alejandro de Tomaso and Medardo Fantuzzi. The Sport 5000, however, has features built to meet FIA regulations, such as a taller windscreen (with wiper) and more conventional doors. The Sport 5000 raced just once, competing in the 1966 Mugello 500 km, where it retired early due to a mechanical failure.
After that, the Sport 5000 remained unused in De Tomaso’s Modena Works until Alejandro de Tomaso’s death in 2003. It is said to be “well preserved cosmetic condition.”
Find this 1965 De Tomaso Sport 5000 Spyder by Fantuzzi for auction at RM Sotheby’s, with an estimated value of $500,000-$650,000.
