There are first cars, and then there are the very first cars. This is the latter, as it is the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona prototype that the automaker used extensively for testing.
The car carries a unique Columbo V12 engine, the Tipo 243. It has a dry sump, three-valve heads instead of the typical four valves per cylinder, dual ignition, twin spark plugs per cylinder and six Weber 40 DCN18 carburetors. The block’s based on the one in a 330 GT, but bored out to 4380cc. It bears many similarities to the power plants in the 330 P4 prototype race cars.
The 365 GTB/4 Daytona has a rich history, which includes 20 years of single-family ownership and a stint in the Museo Ferrari
Find this Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona up for auction at RM Sotheby’s. As a point of reference, Hagerty currently values a first-year 365 GTB/4 in No. 1 condition at $810,000.
