Peugeot entered the 1988 Dakar Rally as its reigning champ. Mitsubishi had won three years before but needed something different to dethrone the French automaker. So, the Japanese manufacturer came up with this prototype Mitsubishi Pajero.
French importer Sonauto developed the Mitsubishi using the 2.6-liter, turbo V6 engine from the Lancer used to compete in the World Rally Championship.
French driver Pierre Lartigue competed in the 1988 Dakar Rally but was unable to complete the event after engine problems arose around the halfway point.
Lartigue would go on to own the Pajero from 1989 to 2021, which has since been mechanically restored by its current owner.
Find this 1988 Mitsubishi Pajero Usine Paris-Dakar up for auction at Aguttes, with an estimated winning bid of 250,000-350,000 Euros (approximately $269,825-$377,755).
