Is there someone local to this car that can check it out for me? I've always wanted one...
Done and Done. I have seen the car. I can go look again. If you have a list of specific concerns I can get them verified.

Yeah, I'm a week and a half out from being able to pull the trigger. Luck to you, doc!! Make sure to PM me if you buy it and then eventually sell it! :)
I'm not in the market but it does seem expensive for a non-running version. They are expensive to repair properly and some parts are nla. Looks like a clean example though, especially for a Midwest car. Hope it makes someone very happy!
this is breaking my brain.
looks like it's a dogleg box too.

One of my dream cars, with an amazing price, in amazing condition.

To get it running again it would need a fuel distributor, injectors, a catalytic converter and somebody who knows that German technology.
I think it really needs megasquirt, a turbo and catless exhaust.

Fuel dizzy and injectors are $525 new. Not sure how easy it is to source used parts for one of these.
I'm kinda wondering why he hasn't fixed the car, since he's a MB tech and has access to the parts cheap. It's worth more than what he's asking in running condition...

He's not an MB tech anymore and doesn't have access to the parts cheap. And the reason that it hasn't been fixed is that most of his free time and money since he has had it have been committed to an E-stock nationals campaign in a Miata (Nocones, weren't you the co-driver?), being on the board of the local autocross club, local autocrosses, and having said Miata, a Monte-Carlo winterbeater engine swap project, a Civic winter beater project, a WRX autocross project, and finally an RX-8 that has depleted the funds. Now he is about to become a father. Oh, and I think that his work takes him out of state relatively often.
IF the Fuel Dist and injectors need replacing that's at least a $1500 hit right up front based on a quick search at RockAuto, plus what ever else may need to be fixed or replace to get it to run right.
Like others have stated, I loved the car when it came out new and have always thought of buying one "some day" but I would have to get it very cheap since a non-running MB can be a black hole for cash!
And I live less then 2 hours away.
CIS fuel distrbutors and injectors are just about generic. There are miniscule differences but once you add feedback control into the situation it's just air in/fuel out.
Is the distributor mounted on the engine or on the inner fender? If it's in the inner fender, probably something from a 16V VW would work just fine depending on if they are the same species (one flavor has a steel body, the other has an aluminum body - easiest way to tell them apart), if it's on the engine, that does make it a little more tricky.
It is not the same although no good reason why you couldn't make one work with some tinkering and the Bosch books.
Well looks like someone in my university car club is going to be purchasing it.

I hope that it'll make it out to Rantoul soon
