I have wanted to do the $2000 Challenge for awhile now...I must be crazy as I am currently doing my Europa TCST now, but here goes...

How do I value a 1991 car I have owned for 16 years, is no longer being driven and is one year too old to have a value in KBB? Can I use the value for a '92 since it is in there, can I use trade in value?

I have the complete drive train (engine, transmission, rear suspension with diff, drive shaft, wiring harness computer etc.) out of a XR4Ti that I traded a Festiva 5 speed for...(I have email copies to back this up)...how do I value this since I paid $75 for the Festiva engine and transmission and then traded the tranny?

I also have a complete engine from a CBR1000R that is still in the frame with radiator, oil cooler etc. that I have a bill sale for and pic of picking it up for $200, is the $200 acceptable?

In reply to TurboFource :

Sounds like the CBR1000R is a clean deal. You paid $200, and have a receipt (as long as it wasn't an inside deal)

Festiva/ XR4TI... will the Festiva engine remain part of the build?  It sounds like you got a helluva deal on the Festiva engine/ trans.  You might not want to have to use FMV (because it may be worth a lot more to an you paid). I think I'd keep the $75 in the budget, and use the Festiva engine for futher trading.

The 1991 car is a different problem. You can use the purchase price (probably not), or FMV. The easiest way with FMV is to propose a value here and see if 5 fellow competitors agree with you.

The car is a'91 Festiva...the engine will not remain. At this point I might use rear suspension components and wheels from the Merkur, how would I value those?

Trade in value on KBB is $150-422 with the $250 as average...is $150 acceptable?

All fair market values used must be proved in your build book with supporting documentation. Ways to prove fair market value include:

  • Copies of corporate listings of similar items for sale.

  • Copies of at least three comparable listings from a peer-to-peer selling website (eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, etc.)

  • A copy of a GRM message board thread where at least 5 users with more than 50 posts have agreed with a proposed fair market value for your item.

The rules are pretty clear on how to establish FMV, and using KBB probably isn't going to be acceptable. It still bums me that we can't use u-pull-it/junkyard price lists either.
