Hello everyone, ,
I have a used s366sxe turbo and turbosmart 45mm from my old civic project. I'm trying to start building a GRM challenge car and would like to use these for my 4.8 ls mustang.
what would you say FMV would be for them? They're both used with a few miles on them and a couple drag passes.
$250-300 fair for the used turbo and $100-150 fair for the used wastegate? Any more than that and it would be too much for my budget.
Also, to clarify...would I be able to "trade" say the stock engine that was in the mustang (if worth the same value) straight up for the turbo/wastegate?
thanks!
What did you originally pay for the turbo and wastegate? While self trade is allowed remember the don't be a dick rule.
In reply to Stampie (FS) :
Thanks for replying. Yeah the turbo was $582 and wastegate was ~$290 or so both brand new but that was 2 years ago.
- as far as the "don't be a dick rule"...is self trading considered "cheating" since it allows for selling/recouping up to $1000 and then you can trade other stuff on top to get things?

Bad news is you bought them for that price. Challenge doesn't have a depreation rule. The self trade rule is a touchy subject with some. I'm of the Andrew Nelson school of it ain't sold without cash in hand.
Self-trading the mustang's original engine for the turbo and wastegate is a legal way to get those parts into your budget as long as you can support the assertion that they have similar FMVs. Sure, you bought them new but that was for another project, and when they were removed from that project they went into your personal stash. 100% legal and IMO not even close to being a d!ck.
yours truly,
challenge dick
No worries, thank you. I just thought it would be nice to use something in the garage I already had sitting around.
But for future reference, self trades like that are allowable in small honest doses if you can prove FMV is equal for both? As long as you're not being a dick about it?

Thank you. 3 eBay ads can be a source for FMV for things like the engine and interior pieces as long as they sold at that price correct?
Also, The limit for selling things is $1000 total or no more than what YOU paid? Is there a max on trading as long as your not an a'hole about it.
also, is what would you say FMV is for the turbo and wastegate? I don't really see any used ones for sale on FB or eBay
no max on trading, just recoup.
In reply to jmill144 :
Yes, just do an eBay advanced search for sold items to get receipts for things you are trading yourself.
The only way self trading will disappear is if someone takes a car with rarer/expensive parts that are worth a lot more than the car purchase and just trades with themself to get the parts they need. It is a loophole allowing something as big as what the unlimited recoup Mongel Miata was in my opinion.
Example: my 87 RX7 if I FMV all the parts I don't need for a racecar to trade myself I'd have an extra 5-7k worth of tradable items to myself.
In reply to Andy Neuman :
I guess that is where I was confused. Let's say I get a mustang for $1000...I can "sell" then engine/trans etc for up to 1000 and then "trade/self-trade" FMV value of misc things like old ecu, wiring harness, rear seats, etc. that can add up to a lot of value if you use eBay FMV for them.

Thank you.
would you say 1/2 price is fair for FMV trade price on the turbo and wastegate?
I paid $582 for the turbo and $290 last year
is $291 and $145 an ok FMV in your opinion?

Given how cheap eBay chinaturbos are these days, I don't think anyone will bat an eye at $436 for your turbo and wastegate. That's my opinion, and if you add a dollar to my opinion you can get something from the dollar menu.
In reply to AngryCorvair (Forum Supporter) :
Well thank you for your opinion. Haha.
so 1/3. I just need two more posters to agree?
I have no issue with those numbers
thank you.
I think I just need one more person to agree with those FMV prices.
Didn't I sell two of bw s366 turbos forum for $200-250? Back in 2015? They weren't new but were never mounted.
