I had some idea of what to expect having watched remotely since 2016. I'm not at all disappointed in my finishing position, especially considering this is not the car I built. Had I been able to bring the thunderbird, in the field this year I would expect a solid middle pack finish.
Im glad I went. The partying was mellower than I expected which was good for me. I'm not a big party guy. The cars were awesome. The people were awesome. Great to actually meet a bunch of forum members and put faces to names.
Some of the results surprised me a bit. Some were faster than I expected, others slower. Similarly, some people were the way I imagined, and some were very different. Hard to get a good read on folks from the forum interactions sometimes.
Overall, my take away is I need to come back. I don't need to win. I don't even need to get the longest drive award. In fact, my next trip will probably be in the same car with my budget reworked a bit and some improvements made. I expect I can shave another 1/2 in the drags and on a similar autocross course I should be able to knock two or three seconds off, both with fairly minimal changes. We'll see.

Same. It doesn't take any skill at all to hack a body off a car and not put any kind of body back on it.
I don't disagree with these points but remember, not every competitor is a master fabricator. The field would be pretty small and the event much less fun if we only had the really off the wall builds.
No one was under $1000, I was at $1042ish and am already shopping for power and researching a way to make the transmission work in normal mode instead of limp home.
Thank you to all who put up with our E36 M3. Curtis, Tim, Joe (berkeley Joe!) Bill, John, and everyone that graciously helped dad and I blow off the appropriate amount of steam we appreciate you and can not wait to be back next year.

I heartily agree with this. I was in fact a poor fabricator before I started attenting the challenge. Now I would say I'm a slightly better fabricator haha.
The mr2 cart is FAST. And isn't that what we are here for?
I'm only sorry our body bounce held us back so much we couldn't give you a better fight in the autox.
I wish someone had taken me and my buddies out to a giant autocross with unlimited runs in a cool car they taught me to build at 16 years old.

I was bummed to see course undulations slowed you down significantly. I know your car is much more capable than what the times reflect. The MR2 felt like it was getting airborne off the big one. Lol
