Paging Ben...92celic...errr...turbo mazda guy, please pick up the courtesy phone...
Had a '87 4x2 sportruck 4 cyl 4sp. Dead reliable, except the alternator and pushrods, and could get up to 28 mpg on the hwy. Rust killed her. She was rusting pretty bad by '96 but she was an upstate NY truck. Miss her. Not enough to get another project though.

Don't get me wrong, i want it. I want it REALLY bad, but i don't have time to get it to where i'd want it before i'd have to rely on it every day.

It can tow your other projects, and tow home projects that you haven't even purchased yet! remember this before dismissing

if you put the d44 under it, it can tow 5000 lbs
In reply to rcutclif:
the d44 would need to be re-geared as you cant really find anything geared at 4.78 fronts the isuzu/honda rodeo/pilot and some IH 1100's were the only application for that axle ratio. the only solid axle is the IH ones which are really rare.
If you are talking about front axles then the d30 is fine up to 37's imo.

I replaced mine with a known good used one out of a wrecked cherokee. Bought cherokee for 300, removed trans w/ t-case, removed lift, interior, wheels, 31 inch tires, and hitch, Scrapped jeep for almost 300, sold bad trans for 100 and actually made money on the deal. It almost NEVER works out for me like that, but sure is nice when it does.
In reply to Cotton:
true you can buy a dead Cherokee fairly cheap for parts.
I am also trying my hardest to not use craigslist to sell it, I dont want to deal with that.
I'm interested but broke, would make a great Home Depot truck. One thing that has always intrigued me though. How similar are these to Dakotas of the same era? I can't help but notice the similarities.
Having owned both, the only similarities I can think of are that they both have a 5 on 4 1/2" bolt pattern for the wheels, and the fact that both of them had 2.5L 4 cylinders. (However, not the same 2.5...at least, not at the same time)

I had a 93 Dakota and the styling is very similar, more so with the early Dakotas. Shame nothing else was.
