From what I've seen, "knocking sound" in an EJ engine means you add another quart of oil, then drive it for 50,000 more miles.

And for what it's worth, an EJ22 or EJ25 is a bolt in affair.
Talked to the guy. He said at start up, it is silent, but as it warms up, it starts to knock and will get louder. He said the clutch is good, kinda soft, but still drivable. He has only owned it a couple months. Asked him if he knew if it had a recent belt change of any sort, he said no. Going to look at it tonight when I get out of work. He is about 5 miles down the street from my work
