Awesome deal for someone who would rather have an automatic than the failgasmic 5-speed

My 5 spd shifts easy with no grinding - 70K miles of respectful adult shifting. Not some ham-handed kid that only ever drove his mom's automatic Corolla.
Now what I would do for a rust-free shell to shove my 02 WRX drivetrain into.
I had zero issues with my old '02 WRX wagon's transmission. I beat that car within an inch of its life on a regular (maybe daily) basis, took it to the track (dragway) many times, and the transmission shifted great up to the day I traded it in. The car ran at elevated boost levels and with a tune, exhaust, etc. for over 60,000 hard miles. I did however put a short shifter, lots of poly replacement bushings everywhere, and good fluid in it.

It's not the grinding that worries me, it's the gear-breaking under load. I've seen a WRX lunch a trans just from debeading a tire.
Bad synchronizers, we can work around that. Teeth like an old hobo or 2-piece shafts, we can't...

Same here. When I sold my '02 last year, I had 97k on it, and the transmission was as good as when I got it. Had to do the clutch once, right before I sold it. I ran the car hard, and lots of things on it broke over the years, but the trans held up up fine.
I put 93k on my 03, with no shifting issues. Only changed the tranny fluid once, at 75k. Still on the original clutch when I sold it to my neighbor, as well as 20k later when he resold it.
My 02 wagon had 140,000 plus, when rust finally killed it. Beat the tar out of that car on track and autocross. Original clutch and no transmission issues. Motor lives on in my race car, it now is mated to a 4.111 5 speed transmission that I had in my rs, that has 170,000 miles and is handling the abuse fine. I do have new clutch as it made sense while it was apart. Some of it driving style. I had a friend go through 3 transmission in his race car that he double drives with his dad. All three failures happened with his dad driving, who was known to be a little rough. They finally went with a six speed, and no issues since. No doubt the six is beefier, but is is also heavier.
