Longitudinal 4wd? Does that mean it's a parts bin toyota truck type 4wd? I always assumed a fwd setup with a rear output shaft. Parts bin truck stuff means waaay more options.
Transmission is specific to that car, and not very robust. My second car was one of those in 1987, and the transmission blew up when one wheel slipped on some ice then caught again on the blacktop. Back then it was $1500 to fix and that was me doing the r&r.

That's what I was thinking but it's not. It's FWD based, no external transfer case.
This thing is freakin' awesome...my folks bought a FWD one of these new right before I was born in '85. Our family beat the mess out of that thing, and it just kept going. I would SO rock this thing! Somebody here please buy it!
I had one of those in red. It ultimately needed too much work so I traded it to a junkyard for a rear tail light for my 89 Toyota truck at the time.

Yeah I emailed him asking if it had any rust. He said it had some surface bubbling in a few spots under the bedliner but no holes or anything major. It took him a couple days to respond to my email. He keeps re listing it every few days on my local Craigslist (Lincoln, NE).

Ok cool, i'll get ahold of him.
I'm thinking about picking this up as a new daily in lieu of another SUV, but i'm SLIGHTLY sketched out by the general state of the car. Not that it's awful, but it's clearly not 100% sorted.
On the flip side, it's awesome, and it's relatively low financial risk.
