I called the guy, he didn't seem like an axe murderer. I don't know much about Diesels, and another project doesn't make much sense for me right now, so I thought maybe you guys might want it.

Id be leary that he wouldn't put a starter in and ask more if thats all it really needs, though i do understand when people are just fed up with something and just want to dump it. I make parts car type offers on all non runners as if theyre in need of engine or trans and I explain why when i do so, and most of the time it works
Rebuilt transmission, rebuilt engine, engine has been spray painted, starter motor broke off.
Personally, I'd pass.
He said that they bought an engine that was supposedly overhauled and they installed it. It ran good but would die intermittently. They tried unsuccessfully to troubleshoot it. They apparently didn't tighten the starter and it broke. At that point they said the hell with it and put it up for sale. He basically said they were in over their head when it came to working on it and wanted it gone.
Sounds like the injector controller needs a heat sink and or replacement. I think that is what it is called, the box that sits on top of the intake and always goes intermittently bad. Carry a spare, move it or protect it, cures that problem.
In reply to Aeromoto:
My dad bought a 93 new and still has it. He put 250,000 miles on it and never did more than oil changes. That was with lots of trailer pulling. His was the last year of mechanical injection, and he had a light foot. It still gets 20 mpg. It doesn't pull as good as a Cummins, but I wouldn't call them junk.
