DAMN!

That thing is sexy!

If only it were 1,000 miles closer and had at least 100,000 less miles on it.

In reply to DukeOfUndersteer:

They aren't that bad . . . just lack the room to get to some things in the engine bay

After the usual coolant system R&R, PC valve replacement, and intake gaskets (if needed), they are good to go!!

Depending on if/when the front end suspension was done, you are golden.

They make a GREAT hoon mobile with the manual, but are thirsty. I got 18/25ish in mine before I took it to the country for storage.

That's a wee little V8 - I didn't realize they came in 3.0L. Cool car though.

I guy who worked at the phone company I worked for had one of these....until he hydrolocked by driving into too deep of a puddle. Traded it for a luxo-Japanese sedan of some sort. Acura TL, I think.

I think he was alluding to the nickasil block issue bmw had......but honestly, with 200k+ on it, I doubt that is an issue now.....they either had it(and were replaced), ended up in a junkyard, or are still on the road.

Looks pretty decent though.

Gotcha . . . You are right, since most have made it thus far, it's almost a non-issue.

For reference, my 530i is a early 93 build (IIRC 3/93) and it runs awesome (even though I have never ran the motor VIN at the dealer).

That is a tiny little V8! Is is a short stroke rev machine? I bet it would make some glorious noises uncorked.

Pops and snarls with the best of em . . . Another one of BMWs detuned gems. . . . They are REALLY choked after 5K

With the 4.0L MAF, TB, Manifold and OTS tune they make a little more HP/TQ than the US M3 of the same generation (even with smaller valves than the 4.0L and same Cams + timing).

I didn't know that about the 8's, are the 4.0/4.4L similarly choked down? And do you think that headwork would rectify that issue?

Based on the LIMITED research I've done, the 4.0/4.4L are pretty underrated from the factory. A good number of 4.0L dyno around 260ish with 4.4L a little higher.

The VANOS 4.4L are choked at the intake. Dinan charge a HUGH amounts of money for a stock BMW 4.0L intake that freed some ponies and high rpm breathing. Both motors work well with OTS tune for more higher RPM power.

The 4.0L manifold and TB work my little 3.0L up in the higher RPM range. Couldn't do the MAF since I have no tune.

4.0L on the left - - 3.0L on the right

3.0L

4.0L

For the 3.0L, the block is different from 4.0L (3.0Lhad a bore of 3.31 in and a stroke of 2.66 in), so I'm not sure if the valve size difference is because they may come in contact with the bore if using 4.0L

I do have some 4.0L heads laying around, but no 3.0L to test them on . . . .

I think of the 3.0L as the old day version of 4.0L S65 from E92 . . . just without RPM, Hot Cams, Dual Vanos, and ITB.
