Already exists. Swap kit for the V6 used in the current camaro as well.

Easier than the other way around. Unless you want all the lesser A/T stuff. RX8 w/automatics have smaller wheels & brakes than the manual trans RX8. Rear dif gearing is different also.

I've read that too. Read that it's the difference in the ports, 6-port (3 per rotor) on manual vs. 4-port (2 per rotor) on auto trans.
The early automatic cars were 4 port engines, but from 2006 onward, all of the cars got the 6 port engines.
However, the automatics were kept to a lower redline than the manual cars for all years, so even the ones with the 6 port engines didn't make quite as much HP since they were not allowed to rev as high.
Actually, I'm talking about all performance cars, not just the RX-8.
I can't speak for other cars, but the automatic transmission in the RX-8 wasn't rated for the extra RPMs.
