I’m looking for an early 240Z driveshaft to swap a 240sx transmission into my 280Z. Driveshaft should be about 21” from the center of the U-joints.
Thanks

you do know that the early driveshaft has the wrong slip yoke for that trans? I ran that trans for a while, I like the 280zx n/a 5 speed better and it uses the same slip yoke as the 4 speed and if you get it from a 2 seater the driveshaft is direct fit. The 82-83 T5 is the best option but also uses a unique slip yoke but theif harvested form a 2 seater the driveshaft fits without modification.
In reply to evildky:
I thought that once you trim the dust shield off the yoke of the 71 shaft it fits no problem?
Locating a 280zx n/a 5 speed up in New England is not easy. Even harder is finding the 82-83 T5. When they do show up on CL they are $$$. I could try to find one online but shipping isn't cheap. Both of those would be great options but the 240sx is way more common since they were offered over a longer period of time. I understand its more work to get it to fit but i'm cheap.
hmm... Maybe my memory is messing with me, cutting the collar off is something that I have done to one driveshaft in that car, it's had a about every available trans. It's easy enough to check, just see if your slip yoke engage. If it does fit I'll measure some of the shafts in my pile, I still have a few laying around. The sx trans is more common, I got one for free when I did the conversion. I didn't care for the way the trans leans away form the driver and the stock sx shifter is huge and has a rubber insulator so it feels completely numb.
I should be picking up a 240sx transmission this Sunday and can test fit the slip yoke then. As for length the driveshaft needs to be around 20.5” from the centers of the U-joints.

The u-joints are replaceable, correct?
Yes, the early Z cars had replaceable u-joints. The later ones are staked in but can be replaced with some effort.
None of the s30's had replaceable U joints, actually I don't think the z31 or z32 had replaceable U joints either.
